Malaysia – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) organised a choral speaking competition which involved fully residential and excellent schools throughout Malaysia.
The competition was held in conjunction with World Oceans Week UMT (WOW UMT), one of the main UMT high impact marine awareness programmes – to support the World Oceans Day event, which is celebrated globally, and encourage honouring, protecting and conserving the world’s oceans.
The Choral Speaking Competition, which was officiated by the UMT vice chancellor, Prof Dato’ Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar, increases the awareness and knowledge of the students regarding the importance of conserving as well as preserving the oceans.
With its theme “Our Oceans, Our Future”, this competition will also be the main platform to promote UMT to the students and community, as UMT has gained the recognition as Higher Centres of Excellence (HiCOE) by the Higher Education Ministry, setting the benchmark for learning and research in marine science locally as well as globally.
A total of 65 fully residential and excellent schools had participated in this competition and eight schools had competed in the grand finale on 6 May 2017.
The highlight of the competition was the Champions Trophy, named after the UMT vice chancellor. Sekolah Menengah Sains Muzaffar Syah (Muzaffar College – MOZAC) was announced as the winner of this competition. Other winners also walked away with trophies, cash prizes and certificate from UMT.
